About the Lapponian Herder

The Lapponian Herder, also known as the Lapinporokoira, is a spitz-type dog breed from Finland. Originally developed by the Sami people for herding reindeer in the harsh Arctic conditions of Lapland, these dogs have evolved into versatile companions that excel in various roles from family pet to working dog.

Distinguished by their thick double coat, erect triangular ears, and intelligent expression, Lapponian Herders are medium-sized dogs built for endurance and agility. Their natural herding instincts, combined with their gentle temperament, make them excellent family dogs that are particularly good with children.

History in North America

The Lapponian Herder's journey to North America began in the late 20th century when dedicated breed enthusiasts recognized the potential of these remarkable Finnish dogs. The first Lapponian Herders arrived in the United States in the 1990s, imported by passionate dog lover, Mike Sherman, who was drawn to their unique combination of working ability and gentle family temperament.

The Lapponian Herder Club of North America was established to preserve the breed's integrity, promote responsible breeding practices, and educate the public about these wonderful dogs. Our club works closely with Finnish breed organizations to maintain the breed standard and ensure genetic diversity in our North American population.

Today, Lapponian Herders in North America serve in various capacities - from beloved family companions to therapy dogs, and even in some specialized working roles. While still relatively rare, the breed is gaining recognition among those who appreciate their intelligence, trainability, and devoted nature.
